It is the eldest working ostrich farm in the Cape Colony, established by the Potgieter family in 1897 and boasts with one of the most intriguing ostrich palaces, dating back to the early 1900's ( the feather boom era ). Retaurant Enjoy a scrumptious meal at our restaurant, situated in the old barn. History of the farm The Potgieter family established Rietfontein Ostrich Palace in 1879, and today the fifth generation Potgieters work here among the dramatic Red Stone Hills. The ornate Ostrich Palace was built in 1909 for the current owner's great-grandmother. Rietfontein is the oldest established ostrich farm in the world. The Spa is well known for its heeling powers and people come from over the world to come and relax in our warm and pleasant waters. We provide wonderful accommodation in the self-catering chalets and tent and caravan stands are also available. The Spa is also ideal for conferences and consists of a conference center and even a restaurant for those not eager to do the dishes. The Reserve was established in 1974 in order to conserve a local population of endangered Cape mountain zebra and their natural habitat. The terrain is rugged, with mountainous plateaux consist of table Mountain quartzites and shales, and Bokkeveld sandstone and shales. It was accessible only by foot until 1963 when a road was built winding from the Swartberg Pass down into this remote valley. Supplies and equipment are to be carried by donkey. Wholesome meals, guides, donkeys and return transport will also be provided. With over 330 sunshine days a year, Oudtshoorn is a great place for Outdoor activities. Surrounded by mountain ranges and blessed with a rich variety of bird and plant life the Klein Karoo reveals it's beauty to those who get out and make the effort to explore. Learn to abseil under the guidance of a qualified instructor. Pristine bushveld, lush vegetation and a 5 ha dam provides a haven for 20 game species and more than 217 bird species. Situated in a limestone ridge parallel to the well known Swartberg Mountains, you will find the finest dripstone caverns, with their vast halls and towering formations. She runs her authentic Xhosa village with pride and diligence.
